Florida NP Network recognizes Debra Danforth during nurse week

Debra Danforth, associate professor and director of the Charlotte E. Maguire, M.D. and TMH Clinical Learning Center at the College of Medicine, was featured in a Florida Nurse Practitioners Network newsletter as a "shining star," during nurse week.

With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting the ability to conduct in-person clinical examinations, Danforth led the development of a virtual Objective Structured Clinical Examination that drew in 1350 registrants worldwide. The OSCE is designed to assess a person's ability to competently apply their professional discipline skills and knowledge.

Alumna Kim Ruscher performs unique chest surgery on set of twins

As part of her practice in Oregon, College of Medicine alumna and pediatric surgeon Kim Ruscher (M.D. '05) treats patients with pectus excavatum,a chest deformity where the sternum or breast bone is sunken inward. The deformity can be corrected with a minimally-invasive surgery, said Ruscher, to prevent heart complications in the future. Fraternal twin brothers, Jack and Clay Mornarich recently had surgery for it at PeaceHealth.

As Florida State University students return to school this fall, new COVID-19 protocols and programs await them as the university works to ensure the health and safety of the entire campus community. 

A pillar of this effort is the Secure Assessment for FSU Exposure Response (SAFER) initiative. 

The program aims to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 through contact assessment, while providing support for students, staff and faculty who have been exposed or tested positive for the virus.

Identifying close contacts is key to halting the spread of the virus, said Emily Pritchard, . Pritchard, FSU’s liaison to the Florida Department of Health for COVID-19 and research faculty member in Biomedical Sciences at the FSU College of Medicine is the administrative lead for the SAFER initiative. Senior Associate Dean Daniel Van Durme, the chief medical officer for the COVID-19 testing program, said determining whom infected persons might have come in contact with is crucial to halting spread.
