It was a great evening last night as our Archbold Hospital partners hosted a reception for our Thomasville medical students. It is hard to believe that our first class of medical students at Archbold Hospital began in 2006, and the program has been going strong ever since. We can even boast to having a few members of our alumni now practicing medicine in Thomasville, and in a few surrounding areas.

  • Cathy Levenson, PhD playing the keyboards and singing at our 2019 Wine Tasting Gala.
    05/02/2019
Dr. Cathy Levenson performed with her band at our 2019 Wine Tasting Gala. Dr. Levenson is a member of our research faculty here at FSU the College of Medicine. The Levenson Lab investigates the role and regulation of adult stem cells in traumatic brain injury (TBI), with a particular interest in the all too common problem of TBI-associated depression. This work includes examination of the neural stem cell populations found in the adult hippocampus and subventricular zone, and extends to the use of adult human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) as a treatment for TBI. Using a well-established pre-clinical model and a full range of genomic, cellular, and behavioral approaches, we are showing that hMSC treatment and nutritional support (eg zinc and vitamin A) can prevent TBI-induced depression. We are also developing a comprehensive mechanistic model of how these interventions work at the level of gene expression and stem cell proliferation, survival, and neuronal differentiation.
