Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences

Through the student-focused advising provided in each outreach program it supports, the goal of the IMS Division is to enable students to reach their potential academically and personally, to determine a career path best suited for them, to engage in real-world experiences in healthcare, and to develop the skills, attitudes, and acumen to attain their career goals. The Division of Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences supports the following College of Medicine outreach programs:

Pre-College SSTRIDE (SSTRIDE©: Science Students Together Reaching Instructional Diversity & Excellence)-- identifies middle and high school students who have a genuine interest in pursuing a career in science, engineering, mathematics, health, or medicine and to give those students the support services important for them to develop the sense of responsibility, focus and motivation necessary for success in their chosen fields. Pre-College SSTRIDE programs are located in school systems in Collier, Gadsden, Okaloosa, and Sarasota counties.

Summer Institute-- a one-week residential program on the campus of Florida State University designed for students who are committed to pursuing a career in the medical field.

Undergraduate SSTRIDE (U-SSTRIDE)--the college component serves as an extension of the pre-college program. U-SSTRIDE is open to students from Florida State University, Florida A&M University, Tallahassee Community College, and post-baccalaureate students. Students are given the opportunity to volunteer in rural or underserved communities, participate in leadership development activities, and may access tutoring and group study activities that enable them to enhance their academic performance.

Honors Medical Scholars--recruits incoming freshmen interested in medicine who have been admitted to the FSU Honors College and who demonstrate a high level of academic ability, a heart for service, and a sincere concern for vulnerable populations through volunteering. The program develops resilient and adaptable scholars, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and compassion to become medical students who reflect the values and mission of the College with goals of becoming personally fulfilled interdependent, socially responsible individuals.

Pre-Health Advising—provides healthcare career planning and information, assists students to integrate all of the components required for a competitive professional school application including superior grades (especially in the prerequisite course work), helps students identify a variety of clinical experiences, obtain supportive letters of recommendation, and develop a well written personal statement. Direction and support are offered from the initial advising meeting through the entire application process.

Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences BS degree-- designed for students interested in health-related careers. A rigorous science curriculum serves as the foundation of the degree, and students can select one of three interdisciplinary majors that fits their developing career goals. The degree includes health care career exploration through the IMS Experiential Service Learning Seminars series and Senior Capstone course.

Bridge to Clinical Medicine, MS in Biomedical Sciences degree—a conditional medical school admission program designed to expand the pool of successful medical school applicants from medically underserved, rural, and inner-city communities. It is a 12-month program that provides both education in medical knowledge, experiences in clinical practice, and community-engaged research.
