Bentze named new dean for Sarasota campus

On Aug. 21, 2018, Dean John P. Fogarty sent this email to the faculty, staff and students:

Dear All,

I am pleased to announce that after a local search, I have asked Dr. Nicole Bentze to serve as the new Dean of the Sarasota Regional Medical Campus starting on 21 September 2018. She will work with Dr. Bruce Berg as the Dean-Designate until 1 November when Dr. Berg retires. The Search Committee, under Dr. Lomax-Homier’s excellent leadership, canvased the Sarasota campus area and made their recommendations to me the week of August 10th.

Dr. Bentze is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Philadelphia, PA and completed her Family Medicine training at the Harrisburg Family Medicine Residency Program in Harrisburg, PA in 2003. She has served as the Family Medicine Clerkship Director for 3rd and 4th year College of Medicine students since 2008 and has worked in both private practice of Family Medicine and as a residency faculty member since completing her residency. She has completed a fellowship in Medical Education Research and Development at Michigan State and is a Fellow of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Medical Student Educator Development institute. In her role as FSU Clerkship Director, she was recognized by the Florida Academy of Family Physicians as Educator of the Year in 2011.
Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Dr. Bentze as she takes on this new role. We also greatly appreciate the incredible service of our Founding Dean, Dr. Bruce Berg who has been Dean there for 14 years as of this month. He helped build the campus, see us through an LCME campus site visit, recruit the first generation of Clerkship Directors and faculty, and welcomed our first class there in 2005. He has provided wise advice and counsel to 12 classes of students in his time there. We wish him well as he looks forward to retirement and spends more time sailing around the beautiful Sarasota waters.

I would also like to thank Dr. Lomax-Homier in leading the search committee to this positive outcome. She and members of the committee, including Drs. Paul McLeod, Wilhelmine Wiese-Rometsch, Matt Thomas, Alma Littles, and Washington Hill, along with Jim Zedaker, Cindy Tyler and Konnie Kruczek and medical student Kevin Hill, took on this role and quickly met, interviewed candidates, and made their final recommendations. I appreciate their stepping up for this critical role at this busy time.

Sincerely, J.

John P. Fogarty, MD
