Year 1 & 2 Committee
More information on the Year 1 & 2 Committee is available on MedNet.
The Year 1 & 2 Committee is a subcommittee of the Curriculum Committee. Members include all preclerkship Course Directors as well as student representatives from the first and second year classes, and additional faculty administrators and staff. The committee is chaired by the Director of Clinical Foundations, Nancy Hayes, PhD.
This Committee is responsible for coordinating the planning and implementation of educational activities for the preclerkship curriculum, monitoring course implementation and student performance, and resolving any problems that arise. Bi-weekly meetings provide a venue to discuss current issues in medical education, to explore potential pedagogical innovations, to identify opportunities for content integration, and for Course Directors to solicit input on planned changes, and share and discuss outcomes of such changes. The Committee discusses and forwards recommendations from course Reviews to the Curriculum Committee and serves as a resource to implement and monitor any recommended changes approved by the Curriculum Committee. The Committee also develops needed policies and instruments for the preclerkship curriculum and forwards proposals to the Curriculum Committee.
An important role of the Year 1 & 2 Committee is to facilitate good communication and understanding between the preclerkship and clerkship phases of the curriculum, necessary to achieve a coherent, developmental 4 year educational program. To that end, the Chair of the Year 3 & 4 Committee/Director of Clinical Programs is also a member of this Committee. This communication and collaboration is particularly essential as we develop appropriate activities and outcomes assessments of years 1 and 2 and assure the readiness of our students to advance to the clerkships.
