Community Engagement 

Reach Out and Read Program

An initiative by Dr. Dominguez during her residency, ROR is a national program that provides free, high-quality, age-appropriate books to all pediatric patients during their well-child visits. Evidence supports that families who receive these books are more likely to read with their children, leading to better outcomes and improved language development. Our partnership with ROR has recently expanded to include bilingual books in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Vietnamese and to provide books to siblings who also attend the appointment. 

IRONMAN Triathalon Florida and Jacksonville

Residents, attendings, and alumni volunteer annually to staff the medical tent at the IRONMAN Florida triathlon, the 70.3 Half IRONMAN, and starting in 2026, the Jacksonville IRONMAN races. Our physicians, led by Dr. Danielle Carter (who has managed medical tents for 10 years and has completed several triathlons herself), aid athletes as they complete the grueling Swim-Bike-Run race. We also partner with local medical schools, nursing schools, and community volunteers to keep our athletes safe. 

Walk With a Doc Riverside Chapter

Once a month, our residents host the Riverside Walk With a Doc Chapter. We meet our patients in the community, to educate, answer questions, and exercise as a group! We get to explore the historic Riverside area, with its waterfront parks and walking paths all while promoting a healthy lifestyle. 

Operation HERO

Operation Health Education Resources and Opportunities (HERO) is a partnership with St. Paul's Catholic School in Riverside that allows residents to teach elementary and middle school students about anatomy, physiology, and medicine. Each monthly lesson is hosted at FMC, or at St. Paul's classrooms, where residents lead grade-appropriate and interactive demonstrations all about the human body.

Ascension Mobile Health Units

Residents regularly volunteer on the Ascension MHU buses, integrated into our population health curriculum in the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. These custom-made RVs are retrofitted to be fully functioning clinics. Residents tend to vulnerable populations such as immigrant children, migrant workers, unhoused, and recently incarcerated patients. We also regularly participate in school physicals at local elementary, middle, and high schools. 

The Way Clinic

The Way Clinic (El Camino) is a free clinic for uninsured or low-income residents of Clay County. At the clinic, residents manage adult preventative and acute care, as well as pre- and postnatal care. The clinic also has a dispensary where residents can prescribe appropriate medications to these patients for free. 

The Florida Academy of Family Physicians

Our program has a rich history of collaboration and leadership with the FAFP. Many of our program graduates and faculty have served on the board, including several Presidents. Attendings and residents from our program regularly present at the annual Winter Summit CME series in Amelia Island (just north of Jacksonville!). Our residents attend all three annual meetings, where we meet medical students interested in Family Medicine and showcase what our program offers to prospective applicants. 

Duval County Medical Society

Founded in 1853, DCMS is one of the oldest medical societies in the country. Our residents are highly involved and participate in general member meetings and dinners, the Residents' Cup competitions, Beers with Peers, and the Life After Residency and Fellowship Conference, to name a few events. Several of our residents sit on the DCMS Resident Committee, which comprises residents from across the county, to advocate for young physicians at the local and state levels.
