Both women will have their tuition and fees covered for the rest of their time in medical school, and each will also receive a monthly stipend of nearly $1,300. In exchange, Tanya and Komal will each spend at least two years in a medically-underserved community.

For the first-time, the Clinical Learning Center staff -- who are based in Tallahassee -- have taken to the road, traveling around the state to all of the college's six regional campuses. There, the staff members pose as patients in local doctor's offices, where third-year students to diagnose the ailments they pretend to be suffering from. This allows students to go through a simulated version of what diagnosing real patients' maladies will be like.

Although the state of Florida's medical schools are producing more doctors than ever before, many of those doctors must leave Florida, due to the limited number of residencies available within the state. With the problem becoming more well-known, legislators are trying to increase the number of residencies throughout the country and the state.

The latest group of third-year students at the college's Ft. Pierce regional campus begin their rotations on Nov. 16 among local community agencies, such as the American Red Cross, the Council of Aging, PACE Center for Girls, Child Protection Team, Project Response AIDS Center, Children's Home Society, as well as many others.

At the college's second-annual fudge cook-off, over 200 students, faculty, staff and visitors sampled thirteen varieties of fudge and voted for their favorite. Each vote cost one dollar, and FSUCares raised over $875 through vote sales and a fudge auction. All proceeds went to Hogar Quietud, a home for destitute seniors in Tamaulipas, Mexico, where students have volunteered in years past.

Paul Elliott, who founded the Program in Medical Sciences (PIMS) at FSU in 1971, passed away October 24 from heart failure. Elliott's efforts to reach out to the rural and underserved populations of Florida laid the groundwork for the College of Medicine, which continues that effort today. Beginning the PIMS program was just one of Elliott's many accomplishments and contributions to Florida and the Tallahassee community.

George "Scottie" Whiddon, M.D. was recognized for excellence in diabetes care by the Florida Academy of Family Physicians Foundation and Big Bend Rural Health Network during a special ceremony Sept. 24.
