Message from the Program Director

Dear ProspectDavid McInnes, MD, MSEd, FAAFP ive Applicant,

It is with great pride that I invite you to explore the St. Vincent's Family Medicine Residency Program, a training experience defined by excellence and individuality. Our core commitment is to deliver an individualized education experience tailored to each resident’s professional goals, ensuring a comprehensive, full-spectrum family medicine journey. Since our establishment in 1972, we have maintained a long legacy of excellence, graduating over 450 skilled physician-leaders equipped to care for patients of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultural traditions. We welcome a diverse class of 12 residents each year.

St. Vincent’s has a long legacy of graduate medical education programs beginning in the 1920’s, and the Family Medicine Program was among the first 50 accredited programs in our specialty. Our commitment to the core tenets of Family Medicine has been unwavering since, as has our commitment to serve our community with attention to those who are the most vulnerable. That tradition will carry forward for the decades ahead, even as the care we deliver changes and evolves with new medical advances.

A cornerstone of our program is the Individualized Learning Plan (ILP). Starting in their first year, residents collaborate with faculty advisors to develop an ILP based on their clinical interests and career aspirations. This plan supports you in tailoring your three-year elective structure and fostering personal and professional development. This personalized approach leads to outstanding career outcomes; we have a strong track record of residents matching with their first-choice fellowship positions in fields like Women’s Health/Obstetrics, Sports Medicine, Sleep Medicine, Academic Medicine, Geriatrics, and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. Our graduates also successfully transition directly into practice, working as outpatient clinicians, hospitalists, direct primary care physicians, ER/urgent care clinicians, and more, across the country.

The residency curriculum strongly emphasizes patient continuity and full-spectrum care, which is crucial for developing critical clinical skills and decision-making abilities. The Family Medicine Center is the centerpiece for that experience, where you are assigned a panel of patients that you will care for during the three years of residency. Your patient panel will encompass a wide demographic of ages and medical conditions, from newborns to geriatrics.

Your education is supported by a team of expert faculty who are specialists in primary care. Our core faculty brings over 100 years of collective teaching experience, spanning family medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, clinical psychology, lifestyle medicine, sports medicine, and osteopathic medicine. Resident education is further enriched by adjunct faculty who provide specialized training in areas such as geriatrics, general surgery, OB-Gyn, and clinical pharmacy.

Ascension St. Vincent’s comprises four hospitals (Riverside, Southside, Clay County, and St. Johns County), urgent care centers, ambulatory centers, and Ascension Medical Group primary and specialty care practices, providing an abundance of training opportunities.

If you are seeking a residency that offers a truly comprehensive education, an individualized path to leadership, and preparation for success in any field of family medicine, I strongly encourage you to apply to St. Vincent's. We look forward to reviewing your application.

 Sincerely,

 David McInnes, M.D., MSEd, FAAFP
