Vision

Our vision is to prepare a generation of talented and caring EMS physicians to serve as leaders locally, nationally, and globally in the field of EMS medicine.

Mission

Our mission is to develop exemplary EMS physicians who practice patient-centered medicine, advance knowledge through research, and respond to community needs. In an environment with a growing population with increased need in prehospital care, our mission is also to provide each fellow with the knowledgebase, clinical experience, leadership and administrative skill, and value set to successfully complete the training program, pass the EMS certifying examination, and practice EMS medicine that excels in patient care, quality, and innovation.

Why choose us

The Florida State University EMS fellowship program at Sarasota Memorial Hospital offers the fellow an opportunity to participate in all aspects of EMS medicine. This ranges from working in a high-volume county fire-based EMS system, to working in a volunteer first-responder system. Additionally, the fellow will be able to integrate in a helicopter EMS program, train in marine rescue, tactical EMS, and hazmat. There are ample opportunities to teach both in EMT and paramedic programs and in the emergency medicine residency program. The fellowship has a dedicated EMS response vehicle which allows the fellow to respond 911 calls. Opportunities for moonlighting are included as allowed by the ACGME.

About the Program

The EMS fellowship is an ACGME accredited one year fellowship program.  The fellowship program’s curriculum consists of both didactic and clinical experience. The fellows and faculty participate in a weekly didactic session which covers key concepts in EMS medicine and evidence-based medicine. The fellow will work in EMS medical direction under the supervision of the program Director and faculty all of whom are board-certified in EMS medicine. The primary EMS system is the Sarasota County fire department, which is a high-volume fire-based EMS system in Sarasota County, Florida. The fellowship also has other participating sites which include the town of Longboat Key, the City of Venice, and the City of Northport. These are all municipal fire-based EMS systems that the fellow has the opportunity to integrate in as well.  These additional EMS systems allow the fellow to learn how various types governmental agencies function. Aeromedical training will be conducted through Bayflite helicopter EMS program, which is housed in Sarasota County and responds to both scene and facility transport. The Sarasota Memorial healthcare system has a dedicated EMS physician response vehicle that fellows will have use of during field response shifts. The fellows spend it considerable amounts of time in the field responding to 911 calls and interacting with EMS personnel. The program allows for a well-rounded education in all aspects of EMS medicine including marine rescue, tactical medicine, technical rescue, and education of both residents and EMT/paramedic students.
