Congratulations to Nicki Taylor and Cheryl Porter who have published their Scholarly Perspective article in this month's Academic Medicine journal!

Their article, “Mental Health Disclosure Questions on Medical Licensure applications: Implications for Medical Students, Residents and Physicians”, discusses the modification of medical disclosure questions asked during the  licensure application. A wonderful summarization of the topics and conversations that were had with the Florida Medical Licensure Board for several years, it has brought attention to the mental health issues of medical health trainees in the nation.

Join the Center for Behavioral Health Integration in congratulating Dr. Amandla Haynes on being recognized as an Angel Honoree at this year's Capital Area Healthy Start 2022 Angel Awards.

Dr. Amandla Haynes works at the Center for Behavioral Health Integration as the Program Manager for Florida BH IMPACT and the Pediatric Behavioral Health Integration Project. Additionally, Dr. Haynes is incredibly involved with the Florida Maternal Mental Health Collaborative, serving as the Chair of the Awareness Workgroup. She is highly active in the community, supporting moms and programs that help families, including as a Birthing Project Leadership Team Member with the Capital Area Healthy Start Sister Friends program. We are so proud to have her on our team and celebrate the recognition of her years of dedication and hard work. Congratulations, Dr. Haynes!

Dr. Haynes is recognized along with hometown hero Ms. Miaisha Mitchell and the Leon County Emergency Medical Services. Thank you for all you do for our community and for supporting the Capital Area moms, babies and families!

Summer Institute provides Kane insight into healing

Meaghan Kane, a second-year student at the Florida State University College of Medicine, participated in Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's 2021 Summer Institute for Medical Students program. Kane shares how her week shadowing clinicians and patients at Hazelden Betty Ford in Newberg, Oregon, deepened her understanding of how she can best help future patients and their families.

We are aware that many departments cap course enrollments to reserve seats for their majors. Below are the departments and the dates when those caps will be lifted.

Biology Courses* – Caps lift March 24 at 12:01am

*Except for BSC2010/L and BSC2011/L only - These caps lift April 5 at 12:01am

Chemistry Courses - Caps lift April 5 at 12:01am for Summer 2022 and July 18 for Fall 2022.

Psychology Courses - Caps lift April 4 at 12:01am

AIM's Holiday Concerts

In partnership with Tallahassee area nursing homes, AIM's Music in Medicine department coordinated the filming and distribution of this recorded concert with the help of its volunteers.

Instructional Origami Videos

AIM Visual arts presents a step-by-step guide to make an origami frog and butterfly. The difficulty of each project is easy for the butterfly and medium for the frog. All you will need to participate is a square piece of paper. We hope you enjoy!

 

Dance for Parkinson's

Arts in Medicine is currently offering a Dance for Parkinson's series that are intended to be accessible to and beneficial for all seniors in the community. The choreography targets strength, balance, and coordination for people with Parkinson's Disease, but is fun for all!  Dance for Parkinson's classes are held live on Fridays at 10:00 AM. Please email aim@med.fsu.edu to join the classes.

Movin' with Mommas

Movin' with Mommas is a virtual dance series aimed at promoting maternal mental health. This collaboration between FSU COM AIM and the Orlando Ballet brings accessible movement to homes all across the nation. These videos have been curated for moms to do specifically with babies in their baby carriers.

About 75-85% of moms experience postpartum blues and 10-15% of these women end up developing postpartum depression. Research shows that exercise can have a positive impact on maternal mental health. Hence, we have brought the exercise to you and your home in a fun and convenient fashion!

Associate Instructors: Sydnie Zvolenski and Sadie Davis (Professional Dancers - Orlando Ballet)
