Sarasota Memorial Health Care System

SMH Sarasota is where our residents spend most of their time. SMH is one of the largest healthcare systems in FL, with the main hospital being a 900 bed, level 2 trauma and comprehensive stroke center. Sarasota Memorial also serves as the region's health care safety net, and Sarasota County's only trauma center. SMH also offers obstetrical services, a neonatal intensive care unit, an inpatient pediatrics unit and psychiatric services for patients of all ages. SMH recently opened a second hospital in Venice to provide the same high-quality care to our more southern county residents. Sarasota Memorial is the only hospital in Florida to have consistently earned the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid's highest 5-star rating for overall quality and safety since the rating system launched in 2016. Other accolades include being named One of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals, Top 40 Teaching Hospitals, 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals, and among the World’s Best Hospitals and Greatest Workplaces for Women by Newsweek, 2024. Working at SMH means you get to work as a part of an amazing team. Magnet Nursing is a recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and is the most prestigious distinction for nursing excellence and high-quality patient care. Sarasota Memorial first earned designation in 2003 and has remained the only hospital in the region with Magnet recognition for the past 20 years. Fewer than 1% of hospitals in the U.S. have received the recognition five times or more as SMH-Sarasota has.

North Port EM Department

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System

Our residents also spend time working shifts at the SMH free-standing emergency department in North Port, Florida. As free-standing ERs become more popular throughout the country, this location offers the residents another opportunity to get a realistic experience of what it’s like to work in a facility that many will work in upon graduation. This site also provides a unique patient population with a higher pediatric volume.

Johns Hopkins

Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital

Our third site and where our residents rotate at for their PICU rotation. This is an amazing opportunity to work at the #1 ranked children’s hospital in Florida. This experience complements our main site nicely as it offers a different patient population than we typically see at SMH, as well as exposure to many different residencies and fellowships.
