Scholarly Activity

Scholarship, Advocacy, and Leadership
Family physicians are leaders, advocates, and scholars. Our curriculum is designed to move beyond the exam room, providing you with the "systems-level" skills necessary to transform healthcare and influence the future of our profession.
Foundation in Innovation and Research
Scholarly activity is an integral part of our training. Every resident leads a faculty-mentored Quality Improvement (QI) project, turning clinical observations into tangible improvements in patient care. We provide robust support and funding for our residents to share their work at prestigious local and national forums, including Lee Health and FSU symposiums, the Florida Academy of Family Physicians (FAFP), and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM).
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
As part of a growing medical community at GCMC, our residents benefit from a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration. You will train alongside residents and fellows from diverse specialties—mirroring the real-world healthcare teams you will lead in the future. This shared learning environment fosters a deeper understanding of the continuum of care and prepares you to be the "quarterback" of a multi-specialty team.
Longitudinal Advocacy and Leadership Curriculum
Our three-year longitudinal curriculum offers a scaffolded approach to professional development:
PGY-1: Foundations of Health Systems – Develop "systems literacy" by mastering the language of healthcare operations, value-based care, and the patient perspective.
PGY-2: Policy, Governance, and Influence – Gain hands-on experience in institutional leadership by serving as a voting member on key health system committees and learning to advocate for the specific needs of the Southwest Florida community.
PGY-3: Executive Leadership and Strategic Mentorship – Experience high-level healthcare administration through a unique mentorship program with our system’s executive officers, closing the loop between frontline innovation and strategic decision-making.
