Researchers are enlisting the help of black churches and federally funded nutrition programs in the quest to identify young children who may show signs of autism. The National Institute of Mental Health has awarded $10.4 million to a team of researchers led by FSU College of Medicine Distinguished Research Professor Amy Wetherby to implement a community-based approach to early intervention.

FSU's College of Medicine is one of only nine in the nation with a Department of Geriatrics dedicated to educating, serving, and providing care to the elderly. It is now one of two colleges in the state to receive a multimillion dollar grant as part of the National Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program. In the second part of his lab’s recent one-two punch, Florida State University researcher Daniel Kaplan said he has solved a cell division mystery in a way that will intrigue the makers of cancer-fighting drugs. The key, said Kaplan, a College of Medicine Department of Biomedical Sciences researcher, is a protein called Treslin.

Members of the College of Medicine and local health organizations gathered as the executive team of Dance Marathon FSU presented the college with a check for more than half a million dollars. The money was raised during the philanthropic groups 2015 campaign, which brings awareness and funds to help provide research, medical care, and treatment at Children's Miracle Network Hospital and FSU's College of Medicine. The largest student philanthropy group at FSU presents the check to the College of Medicine every fall to help bring awareness to the campaign as students are settling back in to campus.

Florida State University is a partner in the $17.5 million award that the University of Florida has received to translate medical research discoveries more quickly into healthier Florida communities. The four-year project is funded by the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) program, which supports a nationwide network of about 60 CTSA hubs.

The Florida State University College of Medicine is naming its auditorium for the late Florida Sen. Durell Peaden, a Crestview physician who sponsored the legislation creating the medical school in 2000. Also being named for Peaden is the college’s Rural Medical Education Program.

Pradeep Bhide, director of the Center for Brain Repair at the FSU College of Medicine, is developing a new, non-stimulant drug to treat cognitive inflexibility. Cognitive inflexibility hampers a child’s ability to learn by making it difficult to switch between thinking about one concept to another or multiple concepts simultaneously. Aspects of cognitive inflexibility are found in autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactive disorder. It affects roughly 25 million people, but no drug has been developed specifically to treat this condition.

Tallahassee Memorial Hospital renamed its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit the Florida State University College of Medicine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit during a special dedication ceremony. With the partnership between FSU College of Medicine and TMH growing each year, along with the funds raised and donated by the Dance Marathon of FSU to support the health needs of children locally, the dedication only strengthens that friendship.

Fifteen years after enrolling its first class, the FSU College of Medicine has emerged as one of the most diverse medical schools in the country, according to current Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) enrollment data.

The FSU College of Medicine is the only AAMC-member institution ranked in the top six for enrollment of both black and Hispanic students among 136 U.S. medical schools. Its enrollment percentage for black or African-American students is double the national average.

FSU College of Medicine researcher Angelina Sutin will seek answers as principal investigator on a $3.8 million grant from the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health. For the next five years, she’ll be studying midlife cognitive aging in Latinos, looking for predictors and mechanisms of decline. To address this question, she’ll partner with researchers at the University of California, Davis, who have already collected years’ worth of data on Latino families that they can analyze for clues.

High plasma aldosterone is an independent risk factor for cardiac mortality, but what is known about the underlying mechanisms linking high levels of aldosterone to cardiac ischemic events? Listen as Donal O’Leary (Wayne State University) interviews lead author Shawn Bender (University of Missouri & Truman VA) and expert Judy Muller-Delp (Florida State University) about the work led by motivated undergraduate Maloree Khan, which tested the hypothesis that increased plasma aldosterone impairs adenosine-mediated coronary vasodilation.
