Lunch & Learns
We host meetings, bringing in speakers experienced in global health topics. In 2021, we have had the privilege to host the following presentations:
- "Immigration-Related Traumas in Patients" with Dr. Elena Reyes
- "Advocacy and Decolonization of Global Health" with Dr. Alice Shallcross
In previous years, we've hosted speakers discussing various topics including disaster relief, refugee crises, the Ebola crisis, and global health opportunities throughout the medical career.
Service Learning Trips
Over the years, a strong partnership with the community has been established which has allowed students to participate in global service learning trips that have involved long-term sustainable community health improvement and empowerment. Since 2008, SIGH has been visiting the rural village of Los Cedros, Nicaragua. In 2010, SIGH in partnership with FSU COM committed to regular visits 3-4 times a year to provide continuity of care and deliver medications that lasted from one trip to the next. These trips consisted of ongoing clinic set up for 3-4 days, during which 100-125 patients were treated per day. For patients with chronic conditions (such as arthritis, high blood pressure and diabetes), medications were prescribed with a supply provided to last until a following return visit. These medications were from a Nicaraguan pharmacy, labeled in Spanish, and were thus very familiar to the patients.
