Dance Marathon at Florida State University raised $1,941,368.54 for Children’s Miracle Network, falling short of last year’s $2,210,165.21. DM at FSU announced the grand total at the Total Reveal Ceremony on March 8 after the weekend-long event. The money is donated to Florida State University's College of Medicine, to benefit pediatric programs and Shands Children’s Hospital.

The Florida State University College of Medicine’s newest family medicine residency program in Winter Haven is already seeing patients. Doctors on the program’s faculty have been treating patients in Winter Haven since summer, with 750 patient visits the last quarter of 2019. “We’re well above our projection,” said Nathan Falk, who directs the program based at Winter Haven Hospital. Arrival of the first six residents — medical doctors getting post-graduate training — will start increasing the program’s impact.

Dementia cafés are relatively new concept gaining popularity in areas such as Japan. In 2012, there were fewer than 50 in Japan. By 2017, there were 4,267 according to a study from the Department of Geriatrics and Cognitive Disorders at the Fujita Health University School of Medicine. The cafés are venus where people with dementia, their families, community members and others can meet, interact and discuss experiences. Research from FSU College of Medicine Associate Professor Angelina Sutin found that loneliness can increase the risk of dementia by 40%. The article discusses how dementia cafés can combat the loneliness of staying home.

Tallahassee Community College President Jim Murdaugh has agreed to designate three acres of land on the southwest edge of the TCC campus as the home site for a new Dale Mabry Air Field Museum. TCC's Appleyard Drive campus is situated on the former army airfield. As chair, Chuck Wells and Tallahassee's Dale Mabry Army Air Field Museum Inc.'s board oversaw efforts to establish the museum and plans to establish a complex on the property by 2024. Wells is also the program director for science and research development in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine.

Florida State University’s annual Three Minute Thesis competition is an opportunity for doctoral students to practice explaining their work to a non-specialized audience, whether that’s a group of business executives, legislators who want to know more or a student’s curious grandparents at Thanksgiving dinner. 

Judges selected Alyssa Henderson, a doctoral student in the Department of Physics, and Sara Jones, a doctoral student in the College of Medicine's Department of Biomedical Sciences, as this year’s first-place winners. They each earned a $1,000 prize and advance to a regional competition. 

Jones explained her research on how the artificial sweetener aspartame could cause anxious behavior that fathers may pass down to their offspring. She studies how exposure to aspartame affects whether certain genes are turned on or off, and how those changes are passed to descendants, a concept known as transgenerational transmission.

“I hope this research gets us thinking about that concept,” she said. “It has global implications for today and for generations to come.”
