Medical Examiner District 1 in Florida encompasses four counties: Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton, with a population base of approximately 800,000. The primary offices are in Pensacola, Florida, with the administration annex a short commute from the off-site morgue (Sacred Heart Hospital). The morgue has 4 autopsy stations with hydraulic, fully adjustable autopsy carts, and each station is equipped with the latest technology, including large touch screen monitors for viewing nearly life size high resolution digital x-rays and laptops for diagraming digitally, voice to text dictation, and/or digitally signing reports remotely. A LODOX is incorporated into the daily workload.   A brand-new medical examiner’s facility is planned, with an expected completion date of 3-4 years.

In 2020, the office investigated 1,739 deaths, autopsied 909 decedents, and performed 143 external examinations. The successful candidate would join a team of three full time doctors and several visiting doctors (locum tenens). The office is staffed by an exceptional group of employees with diverse educational backgrounds and interests but a shared passion for offering quality forensic services to the community. The District One Team consists of 7 full time medicolegal death investigators (the majority are ABMDI certified), 5 forensic autopsy technicians, a full-time transcriptionist, and an executive assistant dedicated to physician support. A board-certified Forensic Anthropologist is on staff at nearby University of West Florida and available for consultation.
