Area Health Education Center
The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) at the FSU College of Medicine was established as part of the authorizing legislation which created our 21st century medical school. Located in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine, the AHEC program supports the College’s mission and has a focus on developing clinical training opportunities for students in rural and medically underserved areas and supporting the College’s wide-ranging youth mentoring programs. The FSU AHEC Program is part of an extensive, statewide network of university and community based AHECs.
Autism Institute
The FSU Autism Institute was established to coordinate and promote research, education and service related to autism spectrum disorders. The specific aims of the Autism Institute are: to promote interdisciplinary research that advances scientific knowledge of autism spectrum disorders; to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and clinical/educational practice; to build the capacity of primary care and other service providers, educators, employers, family members, and individuals with autism spectrum disorders to improve outcomes through research and training; and to maximize the use of innovative video and computer information technology in research, education, and service related to autism spectrum disorders.
Center for Brain Repair
The mission of the Center for Brain Repair is to promote research, discovery, education and community outreach in neuroscience and mental health. Their focus is on the prevention, amelioration, treatment, and repair of injuries or damage to the brain and spinal cord resulting from trauma, genetic and degenerative diseases, cardiovascular anomalies including stroke, drug abuse, environmental toxins, and other causes.
Center for Behavioral Health Integration
The mission of the FSU Center for Behavioral Health Integration is to strengthen the capacity of FSU to serve as an innovation leader for the state by leading and conducting research, clinical and policy programming and education/training related to behavioral health. Center activities emphasize community and medical setting research, clinical and policy enhancements aimed to improve behavioral health outcomes. The overall goal is to significantly improve outcome associated with under-addressed behavioral health disorders (i.e. mental health and substance use) in Florida and nationally.
Center for Child Stress and Health
The Center for Child Stress & Health was established at the Florida State University College of Medicine to provide resources to families and health care providers related to the treatment and prevention of toxic stress during childhood. The mission of the Center for Child Stress & Health is to provide clinical resource for patients, families and providers that will provide primary, secondary and tertiary health prevention for children exposed to toxic stress, especially those in rural and minority and underserved communities in Florida.
Center for Innovative Collaboration in Medicine and Law
The Center for Innovative Collaboration in Medicine and Law is a joint effort of the FSU College of Medicine and FSU College of Law. The mission is to identify and facilitate (through education, the conduct and dissemination of scholarship, and performance of service activities) opportunities for members of the medical and legal professions, working together and with others, to foster improvements in the quality of life enjoyed by individuals and to promote public health in Florida, the United States, and globally.
Center for Medicine and Public Health
The FSU-COM Center for Medicine and Public Health is dedicated to bridging the historic divide between the fields of medicine and public health, while improving the shared understanding of the unified nature of “health,” and the continuum of prevention (from primary prevention to secondary and tertiary prevention). Both medicine and public health embrace a shared value of preventing and alleviating human suffering. This vision will be achieved through promoting the intersection of medicine and public health at all levels of practice (federal, state, and local), via research, education, policy change, and service. In summary, the Center for Medicine and Public Health seeks to actively promote the integration of medicine and public health, to achieve more optimal and equitable health outcomes for all at the levels of the individual (patients and free-range humans), the community, and the entire population.
Center for Translational Behavioral Science
The Mission of the Center for Translational Behavioral Science is to promote public health and health equity using a sustainable team science approaches for the development and wide spread implementation of behavioral and biobehavioral interventions across the translational spectrum. The center will rely on a continuous cycle of interaction between basic behavioral and biomedical scientists, translational researchers, treatment providers, and communities to develop interventions reaching diverse and underserved populations in local communities and beyond.
Center on Patient Safety
The Center on Patient Safety was established to promote and conduct innovative research designed to reduce medical errors and adverse events in all venues of care. The Center is actively engaged in the dissemination of scholarly research on patient safety to medical directors, physicians, policymakers, the media, and other organizations interested in improving patient safety and quality of care both locally and nationally. In addition, the Center provides continuing medical education for healthcare professionals on patient safety issues such as medical errors and adverse events.
Florida Blue Center for Rural Health Research and Policy
The Florida Blue Center for Rural Health Research and Policy was established in December 2002 with a gift endowment from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida. The center is dedicated to the advancement of quality health services and research in Florida's rural communities. The core mission of the center includes researching and addressing the unique challenges and opportunities facing Florida's rural health care system, providers, and consumers.
Center for Underrepresented Minorities in Academic Medicine
The Center for Underrepresented Minorities in Academic Medicine was established to facilitate longevity and career advancement in academic medicine for traditionally underrepresented minorities in medicine (URMM) faculty (defined as black/African American, Latino/Hispanic, Native American/Alaskan and others).
