Admission is granted only in the Fall term. Applications that are completed by December 1 will receive full consideration for admission. Students applying by this deadline will be considered for a limited number of highly prestigious University Fellowships.
Admission will be based on an evaluation by a departmental committee. The Admissions Committee will weigh many factors including the applicant's scholastic record, prior performance in laboratory research, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, GRE scores, and, in many instances, personal interviews.
The application process consists of the University application with supporting materials.

Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this statement is to provide a perspective of you as an individual to the admissions committee, as well as to focus on your academic and research achievements and qualities. The College of Medicine believes that there is much to consider in our applicants and would like to evaluate our applicants as fully as possible. This statement might discuss but is not limited to difficulties you have faced, major influences in your life, outside interests, etc. The statement should be limited to approximately two pages.
The research statement should discuss your longer term research and career goals. The following gives a few examples of the types of questions you might address. Keep in mind that these are suggestions only and not requirements or limitations:
- Which area of biomedical research most interests you and why?
- How did you identify and select this research area?
- For your long term career, do your interests lie in academia or in industry?
- Would you like to be in a teaching institution or a more research oriented environment?
- Finally, it should be noted that it is understood that these interests are subject to change and this statement does not restrict you in any manner.
Include a description of any research experience, whether it is directly applicable to your current interests or not. Include the names of any advisors, the institution and the dates. You should note whether you received academic credit for your efforts. A description of the project goals, conclusions and your contribution should be included together with some discussion of the various laboratory techniques that you mastered or have become knowledgeable. If you do not have any research experience please upload a document that indicates as such.
Please list any teaching experience. Include, at a minimum, the name of the course, the institution, the name of the advising faculty if applicable and the dates taught. If you do not have any teaching experience, please upload a document that indicates as such.

Take a look at the faculty research interests and provide the names of faculty whose work most interests you. These selections do not guarantee or restrict any potential opportunities that you may have as a student in the College of Medicine Biomedical Sciences graduate program. Test Scores and Transcripts
GRE and TOEFL score reports must be sent directly to the University's Office of Admissions (FSU's code for these examinations is 5219), as well as the required application fee. Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required for those seeking admission to the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences. Ideally, these letters will be from faculty who can assess your scholarly potential. These letters will be submitted electronically through the University application. You must enter the names and email addresses of each letter writer in the appropriate place in the University application.
Unofficial Transcripts and Score Reports
To expedite the admissions process, upload a copy of your Unofficial Transcripts and Score Reports.
Obtain the Pubmed ID of any publications on which you are an author. The Pubmed ID will allow the admissions committee to rapidly identify and obtain these publications. Any publications in press or in preparation should be included in an additional document uploaded with your application in a standard format including the title.
English Language Competency
The Department values the enrichment provided by international students in the program and understands when international students are not fluent in English upon their arrival at FSU. However, as English language proficiency is essential for the student’s full participation and ultimate success, those accepting admission must be willing, if necessary, to undertake the additional expense and effort required to achieve a sufficient level of competence. There are various resources available at FSU for improving English language proficiency. Classes taken to improve English competency cannot be counted toward degree requirements. Spoken English proficiency is required for funded students beyond the first year and they may be asked to demonstrate their abilities in that area.
