Our Clinical Home: Gulf Coast Medical Center

Gulf Coast Medical Center (GCMC) serves as the primary clinical site for our residency program, a flagship hospital of the Lee Health system. As a 699-bed regional referral center, GCMC offers an expansive high-acuity training environment that is home to the region's only Level II Trauma Center and the comprehensive Neuroscience Institute. Following a massive recent expansion that added 268 patient beds and three new floors, our facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and modern clinical spaces designed to support the highest standards of patient care and physician education.

Our residents practice within a facility recognized for excellence, including a Leapfrog “A” grade for patient safety and a CMS 4-star quality rating. The campus is a comprehensive medical destination, housing 22 operating rooms, a 70-bed Emergency Department, and dedicated specialty units for oncology, orthopedics, and cardiology. This high-volume setting ensures that our residents are exposed to a diverse and complex patient population, providing a robust foundation for full-spectrum family medicine training.

Beyond the hospital walls, GCMC is an integrated medical hub. The campus features the Regional Cancer Center and extensive outpatient rehabilitation facilities, providing a seamless continuum of care. For our residents, this means training in a location where innovation meets community needs, supported by a facility that has been purposefully designed to foster the next generation of medical leaders.

Facilities Overview

Lee Health is one of the largest public health systems in the United States and among the largest not-for-profit health systems in Florida. Serving more than 1.5 million patient contacts annually across over 80 practice locations throughout Southwest Florida, Lee Health provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care across Lee County.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program is based primarily at Gulf Coast Medical Center (GCMC) in Fort Myers, a modern tertiary care facility known for advanced medical services and patient-centered care. Residents also gain diverse clinical experience through rotations at other Lee Health hospitals and specialty sites, outpatient primary and specialty care offices, post-acute care centers, and affiliated practices throughout the Fort Myers and Cape Coral communities.

Residents will train in a collaborative academic environment focused on evidence-based medicine, continuity of care, and interdisciplinary teamwork. The continuity clinic experience allows residents to manage their own patient panels while developing expertise in chronic disease management, preventive medicine, wellness, behavioral health, and addressing social determinants of health.

In addition, residents benefit from access to a state-of-the-art simulation center designed to enhance procedural competency and clinical confidence. Through simulation-based learning, including mock codes and standardized patient encounters, residents refine essential clinical and communication skills in a supportive educational setting.

The Academic Medical Center at GCMC

Complementing our hospital training will be our brand-new, 72,000-square-foot Academic Medical Center located right on the GCMC campus. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as the dedicated home for the Internal Medicine Residency, housing both our primary continuity clinic and our administrative offices. Designed with the future of medical education in mind, the center features a 24-exam room internal medicine practice, four specialized procedure rooms, and a cutting-edge simulation lab where residents can hone their clinical skills in a high-fidelity, low-stakes environment.

Recognizing that excellence in training requires a focus on the physician as a whole person, the building also includes a dedicated resident wellness lounge. This private space is designed for rest, collaboration, and camaraderie, ensuring our residents have a supportive home base in the heart of our clinical campus. By centralizing our advanced simulation technology, extensive outpatient capacity, and wellness resources under one roof, we provide an unparalleled environment for our physicians to learn, lead, and thrive.
