Faculty Training

The Clinical Practice Guidelines for Tobacco Use and Dependence state that advice from a healthcare professional can more than double smoking cessation success rates. FSU College of Medicine has over 1,500 clinical faculty and preceptors involved in its medical education programs at the main Tallahassee campus and six regional campuses. The FSU AHEC Program Office is training our clinical faculty throughout the state on the clinical practice guidelines and how to intervene effectively with their patients who smoke. Because the majority of our clinical faculty is engaged in the full time practice of medicine, we assist them in the incorporation of current evidence-based cessation practices within their office routines. Medical students completing community-based rotation have the opportunity to witness tobacco interventions in primary care settings, thus integrating theory with actual practice.
