College of Medicine Humanitarian of the Year 2025

In March, Emelia LaCognata was recognized as the College of Medicine Humanitarian of the Year for 2025. In addition to her stellar academic record, Emelia completed over 1,800 Experiential Learning hours during her collegiate career. She served in a research lab in the psychology department, she was an active volunteer at the HCA-Florida Gadsden Hospital Emergency Department, and she was involved in several community events in Quincy, FL, including the Quincy Farmer's Market, Gadsden Horsemen’s Association, and the Gadsden County Arts Center and Museum. Emelia was a well-rounded, high achieving pre-med student who demonstrated a strong commitment to serving her community, both on- and off-campus. She expressed in her application that she feels a deep sense of motivation and satisfaction seeing the positive impact she has on those she serves. She cares about and strives to build relationships with those she serves, stating, "it’s not just about what I do for others, but about how I grow alongside the community." She is also passionate about creating welcoming and inclusive environments. She says, "it’s essential to serve in a way that promotes inclusivity and accessibility for all." As a result of Emelia's strong commitment to service and her remarkable academic success, she has been accepted to FSU's Medical School. Congratulations, Emelia!
