Eighty-one posters at Research Fair

Research Fair

Eighty-one posters were presented Feb. 8 at the College of Medicine's Seventh Annual Research Fair, nearly a 20-percent increase over last year's total. Planners are already looking ahead to next year's fair, considering alternative ways to display even more posters.

The posters, spilling out of the atrium and into adjoining hallways, were viewed by hundreds of spectators. Presenters were on hand at lunchtime to answer questions about their work.

"The Research Fair demonstrated the diversity and success of research happening in the college," said Myra Hurt, senior associate dean for research and graduate programs. "The engagement of medical students, graduate students, postdocs and faculty in the process of research across the spectrum of basic science and clinical areas was on display. A number of posters from medical students in Years 3 and 4 at the college’s regional campuses were among the many highlights."

Here is a sampling of poster titles:

  • “Neuroprotective Role of Vitamin B12 in Alzheimer’s Disease.”
  • “HPV Vaccine Acceptance in Migrant Workers.”
  • “D-chiro-inositol Mimics the Effects of the Human Type P Insulin Mudiator, hPIM on Cells."
  • “Fear, Anger, Fruits and Veggies: Interactive Effects of Emotion and Message Framing on Health Behavior.”

Among the interested visitors at the fair were first-year medical students. They got a glimpse into the kinds of research they can do if they’re offered one of the college’s $2,500 Summer Research Fellowships. Students who receive those fellowships are required to have a poster at the fair.

"The Research Fair was a good opportunity for me, as well as many other students, to share our experiences in research at the College of Medicine," said second-year student Guimy Alexis, who had a Summer Research Fellowship last year.
