Flynn & Naar Co-author Chapter on Motivational Interviewing in the Treatment of Depresssion

Heather Flynn, Ph.D., Department Chair, and Sylvie Naar, Ph.D., CTBScience Director, co-authored “Chapter 6: Motivational Interviewing in the Treatment of Depression” in the newly released book “Motivational Interviewing in the Treatment of Psychological Problems.”
In this chapter, the authors highlight the effectiveness of using Motivational Interviewing (MI) in treating major depressive disorder. They demonstrate how interviewers can build empathy, encourage collaboration, ask open-ended questions, and more when engaging with clients. The authors suggest that MI, by itself, can improve mood and lay a solid foundation for addressing therapeutic alliance and motivation in other interventions. Their findings provide compelling evidence that MI enhances the outcomes of drug treatment.
