Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based communication approach that helps providers engage patients in meaningful conversations that can support healthier behaviors and improve outcomes across a range of conditions, including HIV. Developing these skills, however, requires structured training.

A study by Associate Professor Karen MacDonell, Ph.D., Professor Sylvie Naar, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Researcher Amy Hall, Ph.D., and colleagues evaluated the cost of implementing Tailored Motivational Interviewing (TMI), a specialized training program for youth HIV care providers. 

The researchers found that training a provider to intermediate or advanced MI competency costs an estimated $6,286, with costs comparable to other structured MI training models. The findings suggest TMI is a practical and sustainable approach for clinics while highlighting the value of investing in communication skills that can improve patient care.
