At the 2026 AAMC Group on Student Affairs “Together We Lead” Conference, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, Cheryl Porter, Ph.D., co-presented with colleagues from the Coalition for Psychological Services in Florida Medical Colleges on the often-overlooked impact of vicarious trauma experienced by medical students in clinical settings.
Her presentation, “When the Caregiver Hurts: Facing Trauma in Medical Education,” examined how the hidden curriculum within medical training can influence student responses to traumatic experiences and highlighted strategies to support students both in the immediate moment and throughout the recovery process.
