Tobacco and nicotine cessation in military service members and veterans: implications for area health education centers
FSU AHEC Director Susan LaJoie, DrPH, Associate Director Rebecca Carter, LCSW, and Quality Assurance Director Chenikka Usher, MSW, published an article detailing how Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) are uniquely positioned to address high tobacco and nicotine use among military service members and veterans.
The authors emphasize that because many veterans receive care in community settings served by AHECs, these centers can play a vital role in integrating evidence-based cessation education into health professions training and community-based programming.
By implementing "Ask the Question" initiatives and routine military service screening, AHECs can better identify service history as a social determinant of health and provide more tailored, culturally competent tobacco treatment for this high-risk population.
