Nutrition Education in Medical School

The Florida State University College of Medicine is committed to training the next generation of physicians in the importance of diet, nutrition and metabolic health to improve health outcomes across all populations. For almost 20 years, the FSU College of Medicine has been at the vanguard of incorporating nutrition education into a comprehensive program of instruction throughout all four years of medical training.

Thus, we are perfectly positioned to be an active partner in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ groundbreaking initiative to enhance the role of nutrition in medical education. We believe the best way to integrate nutrition into medical practice is to integrate it into medical education, making it a key component of our mission to educate and develop exemplary physicians who practice patient-centered care, discover and advance knowledge, and are responsive to community needs.

Given our commitment to serve underserved communities, which have higher rates of chronic illnesses that research has proven can be managed and even prevented with changes in diet and nutrition, we endorse and embrace this nationwide effort. Diet-related chronic diseases are responsible for nearly 60% of deaths in the United States. We can all be part of the solution.
