Sunshine Genetics Act News Conference

Welcome to the Sunshine Genetics Act News Conference Archive!

The legislation launches the Sunshine Genetics Pilot Program with an initial investment of $2 million, and establishes the Florida Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases (FIPRD) at the Florida State University College of Medicine. This initiative lays the groundwork for a $100 billion genomic medicine industry in the state.

In addition to pilot program funding, FIPRD will receive $7.5 million to accelerate research efforts. This support will drive the development of life-changing treatments and help families find faster diagnoses for the more than 7,000 rare diseases that affect 30 million Americans.

On July 9, 2025, Florida State Representative Adam Anderson, Florida State University President Richard McCullough, FSU College of Medicine Dean Alma Littles and Florida Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases Director Pradeep Bhide were joined by Dorothea C. Lantz at a press conference to unveil a groundbreaking initiative: the Sunshine Genetics Act — a bold public–private partnership that will revolutionize newborn genetic screening and pediatric rare disease research in Florida.

Key Highlights:

• Newborn Whole-Genome Sequencing Pilot – Offering voluntary, state-funded genetic sequencing of newborns to rapidly detect and treat rare genetic disorders.

• Sunshine Genetics Consortium – A collaborative network of Florida’s academic, healthcare institutions and industry, uniting science, technology, and medicine.

• Florida Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases – Now codified in Florida law and officially launched to advance diagnostics, care, and research.

• Bipartisan, Life‑saving Vision – Florida’s leadership emphasized that this isn’t just policy—it’s about ending the diagnostic odyssey for families affected by rare diseases.

Why This Matters:

• Early detection saves lives. Identifying treatable genetic conditions at birth means timely intervention and better outcomes.

• Economic impact. Every dollar invested in screening could result in huge savings in future healthcare costs.

• Statewide leadership. Florida sets a national standard, positioning itself as a hub for precision medicine and cutting-edge research.
