Hou Lab Publications Explore ADHD, and Internalizing & Externalizing Symptoms in Individuals with Neurofibromatosis Type 1

Yang Hou, Ph.D., and her lab team have co-authored three new publications that explore ADHD, Internalizing, and Externalizing symptoms in individuals with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). The full articles are available below.
"Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in Children with Neurofibromatosis Type 1”
A meta-analysis of 70 studies explored ADHD symptoms in children and adolescents with and without NF1. The review, which included data from 3,653 children with NF1 and 4,895 unaffected individuals, found that those with NF1 exhibited more severe inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive, and combined ADHD symptoms. The results emphasize the importance of early intervention and tailored support for ADHD in children with NF1.
“Internalizing and Externalizing Symptoms in Individuals with Neurofibromatosis Type 1: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”
This comprehensive review and meta-analysis examines the internalizing and externalizing symptoms faced by individuals with NF1, an area that has been under-explored but significantly impacts quality of life. The study found that individuals with NF1 experience higher levels of depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms, and aggression compared to unaffected individuals. These challenges were particularly pronounced in those with ADHD or lower verbal IQ.
The findings underscore the need for early identification and intervention to address these symptoms, with future research focusing on identifying predictors to guide effective interventions.
