Responsibilities
- The Florida State University College of Medicine (FSU COM) is seeking an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse [DNP] to fill a full-time 12-month open rank faculty position at a minimum rank of either Assistant or Associate Professor, dependent upon qualifications and experience, in the Department of Family Medicine and Rural Health. This is a clinical position and is not tenure-earning eligible.
- The position will include around 80% pediatric primary care, managing patients with multiple medical conditions, within school-based health centers within Gadsden County public schools. The assignment of duties can vary.
- The position will involve around 18% teaching and supervision of health professional students as well as assisting in the delivery of an innovative, integrated curriculum and practice in rural school-based health centers within Gadsden County public schools and at the College of Medicine.
- The position will involve around 2% research/scholarly activity.
- Documents patient medical and social histories and performs complete physical examinations to assess, diagnose, plan treatment, set priorities and realistic outcomes, and evaluate the effectiveness, quality, safety and cost efficiency of patient care. Provides and coordinates clinical care for patients through established protocols and under the supervising physician who is available by phone or text if not onsite. Performs procedures specific to the work environment after demonstrated competency and within the guidelines of scope of practice and credentialing protocols. Assesses patients for change in status and institutes appropriate interventions. Initiates emergency interventions in an effort to stabilize the patient until physician support or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrives. Develops patient care pathways, protocols and guidelines for the management of specific problems in conjunction with physicians and other members of the health care team. Analyzes clinical practice patterns to provide optimum medical care and to increase effectiveness and efficiency with a performance improvement mindset.
- Communicates verbally and in writing all pertinent patient information to supervising physician(s), the care team and other relevant healthcare providers. Documents in the patient electronic medical record all relevant data including, but not limited to results of diagnostic tests, laboratory results, patient conditions, and response to therapies/interventions. Maintains close communication and coordination of care, as needed, with supervising physician, community health providers, and mental/behavioral health counselors in a HIPPA compliant fashion. Utilizes appropriate prescriptive privileges for identified patient population. This position has prescriptive authority for prescribing, ordering, and or administering drugs and necessary medical devices in concordance with the practitioner’s license.
- Collaborates well with others including staff at Gadsden County schools, staff at Gadsden County Department of Health, community-based organizations, community leaders, and other faculty and staff at FSU College of Medicine.
- Assesses educational needs of the patient-care staff, including staff of the Gadsden Department of Health (DOH) assigned to the clinic site, and provides training, as well as formal education as needed. Assesses educational needs of the patients, families, school faculty, Florida Department of Health staff and community agencies as needed and provides culturally sensitive patient/family health education interventions as indicated. All patient education is documented in the patient’s medical record.
- Provides expertise and resource information to other healthcare providers, patients and families, faculty and principal of the schools, community agencies such as Panhandle Area Educational Consortium (PAEC), and the community at large related to pediatric and community health conditions. Serves as a role model for advanced practice professionalism through conduct, communication, dress, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Maintains all professional requirements for licensure and certification. As it relates to the clinical responsibilities, participates in the education of medical students, residents, and physician assistants in the FSU College of Medicine training programs.
Qualifications
- Doctorate of Nursing Practice from an accredited Advanced Practice Nursing program.
- Valid Florida licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (in accordance with Chapter 464, FS); or licensed in another state with the ability to obtain licensure in FL.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Certification issued by a certifying agency, or the ability to obtain prior to hire.
- Certified as a Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner (in accordance with Chapter 464, FS).
- Valid FL Driver's License required or ability to obtain prior to hire.
- Experience with pediatric patient care.
- Experience communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
- Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Experience providing subject matter expertise and counseling others.
- Experience assessing patient condition independently or in consultation and providing appropriate treatment or referral for treatment.
- Experience with medical resources and health practices.
- Experience applying current principles, methods, and practices for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Experience performing assigned responsibilities with minimal to moderate supervision.
- Experience differentiating emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Experience safely performing medical examinations and/or tests on patients to include physical exams and developing patient individual treatment plans and documentation.
- Experience educating others regarding health-related topics.
Post-job offer, but prior to hire, the following will be required:
- Documentation of current PPD (Purified Protein Derivative) test as performed by a qualified physician, reporting negative results within the past six months.
- Documentation of physical examination completed by a qualified healthcare provider/physician within the past six months.
Within 30 days or hire, the candidate must provide:
- Documentation of Tetanus immunization within 10 years.
- Documentation of Hepatitis B vaccine or positive antibody titer.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in teaching medical students and/or primary care research is highly desired.
- Experience working with under-resourced populations.
- Knowledge of prescription drugs and other medications and the standard concepts, practices, and procedures related to pharmaceuticals.
- Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids.
- Skill in assessment and treatment of and communication with people from diverse populations.
- Knowledge and experience with health equity or community-based health outcomes or clinical research is desired and scholarly interest.
- Minimum of 1 year working with pediatric/adolescent populations.
Considerations
- This is a Faculty position.
- This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check.
- The position is primarily located in the school-based health centers within the Gadsden County public schools with teaching assignments at the College of Medicine main campus.
- Schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM. Some evening or weekend work may be required.
