College of Medicine

In March 2020, Dr. John D. “JD” Byrd, a Florida Panhandle native, became the Florida State University College of Medicine Rural Medical Education Clerkship Administrator in Marianna, FL.  JD attended Chipola College in Marianna, Florida before graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition with a Minor in Chemistry from Florida State University. During his undergraduate studies, he received a Certificate in Aging Studies through the FSU Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy. He obtained his medical degree from Florida State University College of Medicine in 2014. While in medical school, Dr. Byrd received the FSU College of Medicine Mission Award and the Excellence in Internal Medicine Award, as well as being inducted into the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed his postgraduate specialty training in Internal Medicine at the University of South Alabama (USA) in Mobile, AL. While in residency, he received the Denzil Les Sockwell Humanitarian Award and the Victor Benator Award for Excellence in Teaching by a House Officer. He also served on the USA Graduate Medical Education Committee. Since completion of his residency in 2017, Dr. Byrd has maintained his Board Certification in Internal Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine. 

Dr. Byrd replaced Dr. Steven Spence who served as the Rural Medical Education Clerkship Administrator since the program began in 2005.
