About the Program

The Complex Gastrointestinal Surgery Fellowship is a collaboration with Florida State University College of Medicine and is located at the Jellison Cancer Institute at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. The one-year fellowship provides board-eligible/board-certified general surgeons – after completion of an ACGME approved general surgery residency program – additional advanced complex gastrointestinal procedures that include advanced minimally-invasive surgical cases in the areas of foregut, intestinal, colorectal, and advanced HPB cases.
Upon completion of this fellowship, the surgeon will have gained clinical expertise and be able to perform robotic Whipples and trans-thoracic esophagectomy in addition to a multitude of open HPB surgeries and minimally invasive foregut surgery. Fellows have the opportunity to customize their schedule based on their professional interests and the needs of the Jellison Cancer Institute.
The program provides fellows with extensive surgical training and clinical experience, as well as the mentorship and close supervision of faculty. As fellows demonstrate increased proficiency and efficiency in procedures, they will be afforded further autonomy, with supervision and guidance from faculty close at hand.
Fellows will also have the opportunity for attending call once they have adequately demonstrated their skill and expertise. Participation in the General Surgery “on call” schedule typically involves the performance of a variety of typical acute general surgical emergency procedures including appendectomy, cholecystectomy, treatment of bowel obstruction, diverticulitis, soft tissue infections, incarcerated hernias, etc. The fellow will manage these patients as their own.
