Sarah Temple, M.D., FACEP Welcome to the Florida State University Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Sarasota Memorial Hospital! We take pride in our role as educators and mentors of the emergency medicine physicians of tomorrow; those who are prepared to offer high quality and compassionate care to any patient that may walk through the door. Here at Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) our patient volume, acuity, and diversity of pathology provide the backbone for the incredible clinical training that our residents experience. We are happy to say that this program prepares our residents to work in any environment, be it rural and remote or a quaternary academic center. SMH is a nationally recognized top tier hospital with 901 inpatient beds. It is a county hospital that serves as the safety net for a large area and is one of few remaining public hospitals in Florida. SMH is a level 2 trauma center and has consistently achieved many top ratings for safety, quality care, and for being a good workplace. Our main ED, where the residents work most of their shifts, currently provides care for close to 90,000 patients per year. Our residents also experience what it’s like to work in a free- standing ED where we see approximately 30,000 patients per year. One of the most unique aspects of our program is that, although we are a large academically backed institution, the only other residency program in the hospital is Internal Medicine. For an emergency medicine resident, this means that every day on shift will more closely resemble a “real world” clinical environment in that our residents get to fully participate in every aspect of each patient’s care. This affords our residents the opportunity to focus on learning to be an independent emergency physician with little competition for procedures. Training here at SMH means that you will not settle for meeting minimum requirements and instead will be free to strive toward exceeding all expectations.
