Message from the Program Director

Jay J. Doucet, MD, FACS

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the Florida State University College of Medicine General Surgery Residency Program at Lee Health in Fort Myers, Florida.

Florida State University College of Medicine and Lee Health have partnered to establish the first General Surgery Residency Program in Southwest Florida, starting in 2028. Our vision is to create an exceptional training environment that combines the strengths of a large, community-based health system with the educational resources, scholarly opportunities, and academic rigor of a major medical school.

Residents in our program will begin developing operative skills early in training while caring for a diverse patient population across multiple clinical sites. They will benefit from high clinical volumes, progressive responsibility, and mentorship from dedicated faculty who are committed to resident education and professional development. In addition, residents will have access to the latest advances in surgical care and surgical education, including robotic surgery, minimally invasive techniques, endovascular procedures, simulation-based training, and telemedicine.

Our mission is to develop well-rounded surgeons who possess the technical expertise, clinical judgment, professionalism, and leadership skills necessary to succeed in any practice environment. Whether our graduates choose to pursue fellowship training, academic surgery, community practice, or provide surgical care in rural or resource-limited settings, they will be prepared to meet the needs of their patients and communities with confidence and compassion.

Southwest Florida is one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States, offering residents the opportunity to train in a dynamic healthcare environment while enjoying an outstanding quality of life. As a new program, we are particularly excited about the opportunity to build a culture centered on excellence, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

We invite you to explore our website to learn more about our curriculum, faculty, training sites, and the many opportunities available through our program. We look forward to welcoming the inaugural class of residents on July 1, 2028, and thank you for considering us as part of your surgical training journey.

Sincerely,
