Medical Students

Lee Health offers medical student electives and sub-internships primarily in partnership with the Florida State University College of Medicine. These rotations are open to active, 3rd- and 4th-year students in good standing at U.S.-accredited medical schools, with opportunities in family medicine, general surgery, inpatient medicine, emergency medicine, and obstetrics.
Curriculum & Experience
Students can tailor their 4-week rotations based on their interests and faculty availability across various specialties. Popular elective areas include Trauma, Acute care surgery, and Minimally invasive surgery. Evaluations will be provided at 2 and 4 weeks, and a written evaluation will be provided to the participant and their school at the end of the experience.
Requirements
- Accreditation: You must be a 4th-year (or equivalent clinical) medical student at a U.S. accredited medical school. Observerships or externships for non-U.S. students/graduates are not currently offered.
- Affiliation Agreement: The rotation is contingent upon your medical school and Lee Health executing an active affiliation agreement.
- Credentialing: You must complete all required credentialing paperwork before starting the rotation.
Application
Positions are limited and require significant advance planning (i.e., greater than 6 months, preferably more than 12 months).
Applications are typically processed through two primary channels:
- VSLO: Lee Health and its affiliated FSU College of Medicine programs accept applications via the AAMC VSLO (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities) platform.
- Direct Contact: For specific general surgery clerkships, you can contact the General Surgery program coordinator directly (jonathan.argueta@med.fsu.edu) with your CV and a statement of interest.
