Prospective Students

Thank you for your interest in the Biomedical Sciences Degree Program at FSU. This program is designed to provide a broad background to develop scientific and psychosocial knowledge, and an understanding of the health care team and the health care system. The degree includes health care career exploration through the Experiential Service-Learning Seminars series, and Senior Capstone course. Because of the rigorous science-based core, the experiential service learning hours, and the seminars, all three majors prepare students to take advantage of the many career options the healthcare field offers. 

A significant part of the degree program is the experiential learning and health-related services students are required to complete each semester in order to graduate with this degree. An extra Experiential Learning Placement Form will be required when applying to any of our Biomedical Science Majors.

After you have applied to FSU please be sure to submit our Experiential Seminar Placement Form as well.

Prerequisite Coursework

The following courses must be completed with a final grade of C- or better at the time of application:
BSC X010, X010L Biological Science I and Lab and BSC X011, X011L Biological Science II and Lab
CHM X045, X045L General Chemistry I and Lab and CHM X046, X046L General Chemistry II and Lab
PSY X012 General Psychology
MAC X105 College Algebra
MAC X140 Pre-Calculus 
MAC X114 Trigonometry

The common degree pre-requisites for other similar majors in the State University System list the BSC X010, X010L, PSY X012 as pre-requisites but do not include CHM X045, X045L and MAC X140. BSC X085 and X086 are not required as pre-requisites for entry into the IMS major, but will be accepted as fulfilling major elective requirements.

IMPORTANT: Many of the core and upper level courses in the Biomedical Science degree have pre-requisites. Pre-calculus, trigonometry, and general psychology are required as they are pre-requisite courses for many of the degree core and major elective requirements.

Prerequisites/corequisites: You are responsible for completing the pre-requisites or co-requisites required for courses in which you enroll. Some departments will drop you from a course if you do not have the required prerequisite. However, your failure to have completed appropriate pre-requisites is not justification for you to request a course drop outside the normal procedures for course drops.
 

Transfer Policy    

Note: Students may not transfer into a Biomedical Science (B.S.) major from another major at FSU or add a Biomedical Science major as a second major after the first semester of their junior year (Fifth Term). Prospective transfer students and upper level students interested in the Biomedical Science majors should contact the Program Manager/Mapping Coordinator with specific questions about major and mapping requirements.
 

Requirements for lower-division transfer students with less than 60 credit hours:

• Meet FSU admissions requirements
• Complete the following courses with a final grade of C- or better before applying to FSU:
  • General Psychology
  • College Algebra
  • Pre-Calculus and/or Trigonometry (or higher math, not statistics*)
  • General Chemistry I and Lab
  • General Chemistry II and Lab and/or General Biology I and Lab - for science majors
  • At least one English course (FSU requirement)
• Be on track with mapping milestones for appropriate map terms 1-3 http://www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/
• Complete Experiential Seminar Placement Form by appropriate deadline
• Before admission to FSU, we highly recommend students complete 32 - 96 experiential service hours in health related fields, that are patient centered and hands-on experiences. 
  *Students may complete a higher level math (Calculus I). Applied Statistics will not count toward the Biomedical Science Degree requirements.

Requirements for upper-division transfer students with 60- 90 credit hours or with an AA Degree from a Florida Public Institution

• Meet FSU admissions requirements
• Complete the following courses with a final grade of C- or better before applying to FSU:
  • General Psychology
  • College Algebra
  • Trigonometry
  • Pre-Calculus (or higher math, not statistics)
  • General Chemistry I and Lab - for science majors
  • General Chemistry II and Lab - for science majors
  • General Biology I and Lab - for science majors
  • General Biology II and Lab** - for science majors
  • Two English courses (FSU requirement)
• Be on track with mapping milestones for appropriate map terms 1-4 http://www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/
• Complete Experiential Seminar Placement Form by appropriate deadline
• Before admission to FSU we highly recommend students complete about 96 -128 experiential service hours in health related fields, that are patient centered and hands-on experiences. 
  *Students may complete a higher level math (Calculus I). Applied Statistics will NOT count toward the Biomedical Science Degree requirements.
  **BSC2011 Lab strongly recommended but not a mapping milestone.

Transfer students with 90+ credit hours:

This program is not recommended for students transferring with over 90 credit hours. It will be in the student's best interest to seek a different major. The reason is students who have over 90 credit hours already will not be able to 1) graduate in a timely fashion (there is a two year minimum for this program), 2) get the full benefits this program has to offer, and 3) gain the quality experiential learning required for this program. Also, FSU requires all transfer applicants to have demonstrated satisfactory academic progress. Applicants who will have attempted 90+ semester hours of college credit (including withdrawals and repeated courses) before enrolling at Florida State University must submit a personal statement to the office of Admissions at admsofficer@fsu.edu. The statement must address the reason(s) for transferring to FSU this late in the academic program and should also include a plan for a timely graduation.

Students are generally charged additional tuition each credit hour beyond 144 hours for a normal 120-semester hour degree program as part of the excess credit surcharge law. Major Program of Studies at FSU 

A major in the Biomedical Science B.S. degree program requires completion of the core requirements (54-59 hours), 33 hours of major and major elective coursework, participation in on-going experiential learning activities, maintenance of an experiential portfolio, and completion of a capstone project. All courses must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
 

Experiential Learning Placement Form

The Biomedical Science B.S. Degree program offers three majors, 1) Community Patient Care, 2) Health Management, Policy, and Information, and 3) Clinical Professions which require health related experiential learning hours as part of the degree requirement. Undergraduate transfer students seeking admission or current FSU students wishing to change their major to one of the three majors in the Biomedical Science B.S. Degree Program must complete the Experiential Seminar Placement Form.  Failure to submit by the deadline will affect the approval decision. Only one Experiential Learning Placement Form needs to be submitted per term.

Previous activities - Students transferring into this degree program with prior approved experiences that were done after high school graduation will be required to submit the Experiential Learning Placement Form. The Community Coordinator will review all prior activities and approve/deny hours based on criteria sound in the Experiential Learning Hours Guide. The number of hours will be based on the student's incoming map term (see below).

Note: All students wishing to transfer, change major, seek a Second bachelor's degree or readmission into any of the Biomedical Sciecne degree majors must submit the Experiential Learning Placement Form. 

Transfer, Second Bachelor's Degree, or Readmission Students

Students seeking admission or readmission into FSU must first apply to the University through the FSU Undergraduate Office of Admissions Application process. This is a separate application from the Experiential Learning Placement Form.

Major Change for Current FSU Students 

Students interested in changing their current major must submit the Experiential Learning Placement Form before the major change can be approved.

• Email IMSadvising@med.fsu.edu to further discuss your major change.
• When you begin the application process, please be sure to have your FSU EMPLID ready and use your FSU email address only.
• Deadlines to submit Experiential Learning Placement Form:
  • Fall and Spring: By the 12th week deadline
  • Summer: By the 12th week deadline of Session C

Note: Any student who misses the deadline will have to wait until after grades post to be considered for the major change.

• Please note that completion of this form does not guarantee acceptance into the Biomedical Science B.S. Degree Program.
• Any mapping holds placed by your current major will not be removed unless your major change has been approved by the Biomedical Science B.S. Degree Program Mapping Coordinator.
• You will be contacted by the Biomedical Science B.S. Degree Program Mapping Coordinator as soon as your application is reviewed.
