Section 3: Faculty Governance
Bylaws
The FSU COM Bylaws (Appendix. Bylaws) indicate how faculty participate in governance of the College through their membership in FSU COM’s Faculty Council, their election of Faculty Council officers and the Faculty Council Representative Committee, as well as various administrative and standing committees. Administrative committees support the College by coordinating diverse administrative functions in areas under the direct responsibility of Assistant or Associate Deans. Standing committees generally provide direct support to the Dean in both operational and policy matters. The responsibilities and function of these committees are specified in detail in the FSU COM Bylaws. Faculty participation is based on the premise that the College functions properly when integrity is nurtured and maintained by the Dean, Chairs, other administrators, faculty members, staff members, and students.
The Faculty Council
The Faculty Council is the basic legislative body of the College, with jurisdiction over all educational and academic matters within the purview of the College of Medicine, including determination of its curriculum as well as admission and graduation standards. All faculty members whose primary appointment is in the College of Medicine are members of the Faculty Council, whereas voting members of the Faculty Council are the full-time faculty, at every rank, including tenured, tenure-earning and non-tenure-earning
Faculty Council Executive Committee (FCEC). The Faculty Council Executive Committee (FCEC) is comprised of two voting members from each academic department, elected by the full-time members of their respective departments, for renewable two-year terms. The FCEC serves as an advisory body to the executive leadership of the college, and has as its mission to foster communication and dialogue between the faculty and college administration on any policy, practice, or topic that is of interest to the faculty. The FCEC is charged with developing and forwarding recommendations to the administration on behalf of the faculty. The FCEC also serves as a resource for communication and clarification on any topic of interest to faculty members. All faculty members are encouraged to contact the FCEC to discuss any item of interest.
