Wellness

At the Family Medicine Residency Program at Tallahassee Memorial, we utilize the U.S. Surgeon General’s framework for ‘Workplace Mental Health and Well-Being’ and the Family Medicine Residency Directors Physician Wellness Task Force ‘Comprehensive Well-Being Action Plan’ in forming our framework for well-being. We aim to be a program that prioritizes opportunities for growth, community and connection, resident autonomy, safety, and a great sense of meaning in the work that residents do every day.
Wellness Committee
The wellness committee oversees our program’s wellness initiatives. It is comprised of two elected resident champions and at least one faculty champion. This committee meets quarterly.
STRIDE sessions
Our Supportive Team to Rejuvenate, Inspire, Drive, and Enhance (STRIDE) sessions are regular wellness sessions that take place during didactic blocks that cover topics such as burn out, imposter syndrome, meditation, self-care through the arts, creating psychological safety in the workplace, mindfulness, and more.
Fellowship
With the assistance of our social committee, we plan bi-monthly fellowship events with fellow residents, faculty, and colleagues. These events include our “weekend” hikes, annual Carnival/Mardi Gras Celebration, Sports/Field Day, holiday potlucks, campfires, and more.
Class retreats
We recognize the difficulties faced in the years of residency and the value of camaraderie and restoration. Each year, the entire intern class has all hospital and clinic rotations covered while they (and family members, if applicable), are treated to a weekend at the beach. The PGY3 class has a “staycation” retreat for local activities like kayaking, bowling, picnicking, and other activities of reflection as they near the culmination of this chapter of their careers.
Growth mindset
In thinking about wellness, we strive to celebrate our victories while simultaneously finding opportunities to grow. Some initiatives we are currently working on include:
- The development of a Resident Experience committee. This committee will reinforce and help further develop the policies and procedures that allow all residents to be involved and fully supported.
- Regularly scheduled resident “check-ins” with the resident and faculty wellness champions, in addition to existing mentorship opportunities through assigned faculty advisors, “big siblings,” and optional local post-grad mentors.
Physical and mental health support
Residents at TMH all receive free membership to a local state-of-the-art health and fitness center to maintain an active lifestyle. As members of the Capital Medical Society (CMS), residents are eligible to utilize the CMS Physician Wellness program, which includes free counseling and coaching. As employees of TMH, residents also have full access to any and all Employee Assistance Program (EAP) resources, including therapy, financial counseling, and more—also confidential.
