More Florida State family physicians

The FSU College of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program at Lee Health in Fort Myers has received good news: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has granted the program continued accreditation status, while approving a permanent increase in program growth from 18 to 24 residents.

"This accreditation decision is a reflection of the efforts of Dr. Gary Goforth, the program faculty, and the Lee Health administration in assuring the quality of the residency program,” said Joan Meek, associate dean for graduate medical education at the College of Medicine.

“Continued accreditation with commendation and no citations is the best possible outcome from the ACGME,” she said. “The increase in resident complement from 18-24 will allow the program to train additional family physicians to provide care for the population in the southwest area of Florida."

The ACGME conducted a site visit in August to assess the quality of the residency program and to gauge its ability to handle additional residents. The program, with Goforth as its founding director, began accepting residents in 2013.
