Diabetes and underserved populations
Sept. 26, 2011
Florida’s surgeon general and experts from the Florida State College of Medicine and elsewhere participated in a Sept. 23 conference on diabetes.
“Diabetes Prevention and Management: Reaching Diverse and Underserved Populations” was sponsored by the state Health Department’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. It took place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at FSU’s Turnbull Conference Center in Tallahassee. The College of Medicine and Tallahassee Memorial Hospital’s Diabetes Center were the co-hosts.
Among the presenters from the College of Medicine were Gail Bellamy, Ph.D., director of the Center for Rural Health Research and Policy, on health literacy; Ken Brummel-Smith, M.D., chair of the Department of Geriatrics, on older patients; and José E. Rodríguez, M.D., associate professor and medical director for Neighborhood Health Services, on cultural considerations. The conference was designed for physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and other health-care providers. CME and CEU credits were provided.
