FSU COM mourns Dr. Daniel Van Durme
With great sadness we are writing to confirm the death of Dr. Daniel Van Durme, our Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Community Affairs and Professor in our Department. Dr. Van Durme was struck and seriously injured while riding his motorcycle on the afternoon of April 20.
He was hospitalized in the ICU at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare until Tuesday, May 30, 2023, when his family allowed doctors to initiate the process of organ donation in keeping with Dr. Van Durme’s wishes.
Dr. Van Durme arrived at Florida State in 2004 as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Rural Health. In 2018, he became the college’s Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Community Affairs. As a leader in Family Medicine, his absence is felt in many areas of the COM, FSU, Tallahassee community, Florida, the US and around the world, as his involvement in medical education, patient care, organized medicine, global health and other activities was shared with so many.
He will be dearly missed by his College of Medicine family and so many others. His impact here, in the community and throughout Florida and other parts of the world is immeasurable.
In his honor, the college is establishing the Daniel Van Durme, M.D. Memorial Scholarship Fund. We will share that link when it becomes available.
