Training Focused on Commonalities for the Common Good: A Transdiagnostic Approach for the Next Generation of Health Service Psychologists

As mental health needs continue to rise globally, limited access to evidence-based care remains a major challenge for health systems and behavioral health providers. Researchers are increasingly exploring how graduate training programs can better prepare the next generation of clinicians to deliver effective, scalable mental health treatment.

In an article led by Assistant Professor & Licensed Psychologist Mike Drury, PsyD, ABPP, researchers examined how training in transdiagnostic evidence-based treatments could strengthen health service psychology graduate programs. Unlike disorder-specific approaches, transdiagnostic treatments are designed to address a broad range of mental health concerns.

The authors argue that integrating transdiagnostic approaches into graduate education could improve training efficiency, reduce burden on training programs and better prepare students for the realities of clinical practice, particularly in resource-limited environments.
