CTBS Study Evaluates Tailored Motivational Interviewing to Improve HIV Care for Youth

The Center for Translational Behavioral Science attended the HIV Implementation Science Symposium, where Director Sylvie Naar, Ph.D., presented on “Tailored Motivational Interviewing: Results of a Type 3 Effectiveness-Implementation Trial.”
The study highlights ongoing challenges in HIV prevention and care for youth. Researchers tested Tailored Motivational Interviewing (TMI) to improve HIV care delivery. Conducted across 10 clinics with 151 providers, the study found significant gains in providers' MI competence. While some decline in competence occurred after 12 months, improvements remained above baseline. TMI shows promise for enhancing HIV care for young people and strengthening the health care workforce.
