Dr. Kerwyn Flowers — A Respected Leader Stepping Into a New Chapter

It is with immense pride — and just a hint of sadness — that the Department of Family Medicine & Rural Health celebrates Dr. Kerwyn Flowers as she steps into her new role as dean of the Florida State University College of Medicine Tallahassee Regional Campus, effective July 18, 2025.
Dr. Flowers has been a cornerstone of the College of Medicine community, known for her dedication, warmth and mentorship. She is a favorite among students, staff and colleagues. Her transition to this new role is a moment of pride for all who have had the privilege to work alongside her — though there’s no doubt she will be dearly missed in her previous day-to-day roles.
A native of Quincy, Florida, Dr. Flowers has been deeply connected to the communities she serves. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Florida A&M University and her Doctor of Osteopathy from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her clinical journey has taken her across several states, practicing in Rome and Bainbridge, Georgia, and later serving the Panama City Beach community as part of Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. Her commitment to primary care and rural health care access has been a defining feature of her career.
Since joining Family Medicine and Rural Health in 2017, Dr. Flowers has continually stepped into roles of growing impact. She was named Director of Rural Medical Education in 2019, took the reins as Course Director for the M1 Clinical Skills Curriculum and later served as Director of Clinical Programs and Chair of the Year 3/4 Curriculum Committee beginning in 2022. Her leadership is matched only by her compassion — for her students, patients and colleagues.
With her appointment, Dr. Flowers will continue to shape the next generation of physicians, now from a campus-wide leadership position. She will remain involved in the Medical Education Program in Marianna alongside Dr. J.D. Byrd and will no doubt bring the same heart, insight, and excellence to her new responsibilities as she has throughout her career.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Flowers on this well-earned and exciting next step. The future is in very capable hands.
