Scholarly Activity

All residents are required to participate in scholarly activity during their residency training. The specific requirements for this are set forth by the Florida State University Graduate Medical Education Department and include participation in QI projects, research, presentations, and involvement in hospital committees. Our program has the ability and resources to provide support and membership to those residents who are particularly passionate about research. Further details will be discussed during the interview process. 

The purposes of a resident research effort within our residency training program are multifaceted. Overall, these efforts will advance residents’ knowledge of the basic principles of research, including how research is conducted, evaluated, explained to patients, and applied to patient care.Consistent with recommendations, implementation of the program should foster an atmosphere of inquiry and scholarship within the residency program, develop skills to assess quality of published clinical research, promote confidence in the reading of medical literature, and cultivate a career-long curiosity and passion for continued exploration and learning.

• End of PGY1:
  • Outline study plan
• PGY2-Fall:
  • IRB submission complete
  • Remainder – collect data
• PGY3-Fall:
  • Analyze data
  • Winter - Write abstract
  • Spring - Present abstract locally
• PGY3, 4
  • Draft, edit, submit manuscript
• PGY4 – present at a regional or national meeting
