What do you like about HMSS?
My favorite part of HMSS is the people. The friendships I have made through this program remind me that I am not on this journey alone. Each scholar I have interacted with is so supportive, and it is amazing to be around people who push me to do better. Additionally, the guidance from Dr. Foster and Dr. Speights is invaluable and helps us navigate our paths more confidently. Being surrounded by driven individuals who share a passion for medicine creates a beautiful, close-knit community where everyone can learn from each other, grow together, and build meaningful connections.
Why do you want to go into medicine?
My aspiration to become a doctor was driven by more than a love of science or a desire to treat illnesses; it was rooted in a deep love for people and my community. Physicians not only uphold the Hippocratic Oath to do no harm but also actively engage in the lives of their patients. As the physician I interviewed put it, "It’s not just about taking care of their medical needs; there are people who need guidance, leadership, and care in terms of navigating difficult situations." During several interactions in healthcare settings, I saw health professionals in action demonstrating one common theme: they were all noble, compassionate people trying to make a difference in the world. And with the support of the HMSS program at FSU, I plan to do the same.
