What do you like about HMSS?

I liked getting to know the faculty at the med school and all the support during undergrad it provided along with being able to meet people with similar interests.

Why do you want to go into medicine?

Tough question with a long answer. Short version - I like biology, I like helping people, and medicine just seemed natural.

What is residency like?

It is tough but manageable - like having a 60-80 work week with studying also. You get to do more of the specialty you like and are actually contributing a lot and directly responsible for patient care.

How did FSU College of Medicine prepare you for residency?

I got to work one-on-one with the Attending, which is similar to residency. It helped provide the tools I needed and basic knowledge to succeed in my rotations. Starting out, you are like "OMG I am not prepared." Two months in, you are like "OK, I think I can do this." Six months in, you are like "Bring it on!", then it gets tougher, and you go back to "OMG I am not prepared."

Joseph entered the Honors Medical Scholars Program in 2006 and earned his medical degree from the FSU College of Medicine in 2014. He is now a resident in the General Psychiatry Residency at Georgia Regents University in Augusta, Georgia.
