What is medical school like?

My life has absolutely changed since starting med school.  I finally feel as if I’m studying and working for something that will help people.  School has become more than simply me and my goals, but about saving lives.  Strangely, despite the hours studying, research, and class, I have more of a “life” now than I’ve ever had before.  I’ve made incredible friends and have found that there is always time for whatever I find important.

What do you like about FSU College of Medicine?

FSU CoM is absolutely amazing.  Every med school is going to have incredible teachers and opportunities, and FSU is no different in that.  Two things set it apart in my opinion.  First, the teachers do not teach because they have to but because they love it.  Sure, many are doing research as well but their first goal is to help us med students become incredible doctors.  They are always encouraging us to come in for office hours and willing to change their schedules to assist us.  They teach us not to just answer questions based off rote memory but to really think and understand what’s happening.  Second, we have four learning communities (LCs) each with thirty students who do everything together.  These students have become some of my best friends and a group of us have a weekly “Family Dinner” and participate together in intramural sports. We students have become a true family and support and help each other however possible.
