What do you like about HMSS?

I like that, through HMSS, we are connected with other students who not only have a similar goal of becoming a doctor, but also share a desire to be the type of doctor that truly cares for his/her patients and wants to serve the medically underprivileged. I also like that HMSS fosters a heart for service, instills leadership skills, and is truly a community of caring, supportive people.

Why do you want to go into medicine?

I want to go into medicine because I want to be able to help economically, and consequently medically, disadvantaged populations. On my first HMS service trip to Immokalee, Florida, I was struck by how vastly different healthcare is in rural areas. I’ve always believed that my love of medicine and service go hand-in-hand, and it’s why I want to be a doctor. Through my hospital volunteer experiences and having important role models in medicine, such as my mom, I’ve witnessed the type of patient-centered healthcare that I hope to emulate one day.
