Lawnwood Physicians Award Scholarships
June 25, 2021
On June 24, during the monthly meeting of the Medical Executive Committee of the Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, the Lawnwood Physicians group presented scholarships to students from the Fort Pierce Regional Campus of the Florida State University College of Medicine. The scholarship’s purpose is to help defray some of the cost of medical education during the clinical years of training. Students selected for this scholarship must call the Treasure Coast their hometown.
The two students selected this year were Joe Tubito, Class of 2022, who was born in Stuart, Florida, and lived in both Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce and Naomi Thelusma, Class of 2022 who hails from Port St. Lucie. Tubito attended Frances K. Sweet Elementary and Lincoln Park Academy in Fort Pierce, Indian River Charter High School in Vero Beach and completed some classes at Indian River State College. Thelusma attended Northport Middle School in Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce Westwood High School in Fort Pierce.
Additionally, the Lawnwood Physicians group will provide funding for the Advanced Cardiac Life Support training for the 20 medical students in the Class of 2023 at the Fort Pierce Regional Campus.
Students begin medical school centrally at the Tallahassee campus of the Florida State University College of Medicine and complete their first two years of education there. All then transfer to a regional campus to complete the clinical portion of their medical education. Here on the Treasure Coast, students are taught by community-based faculty in hospitals and offices from Stuart to Sebastian.
The Florida State University College of Medicine has 6 regional campus throughout the state of Florida. The Fort Pierce Regional campus, open since 2007 on the campus of the Indian River State College, to date has graduated 217 doctors to date. The School of Physician Assistant Practice also offers clinical training at regional campuses. The Fort Pierce Regional Campus is currently training 10 PA students in the Class of 2021.
It is the joint hope of the Lawnwood Physicians Group and the Florida State University College of Medicine that many of the former graduates will consider returning to this area to practice medicine in their chosen fields.
